Why Do Severed Feet Keep Washing Up On America’s West Coast?

16 human feet - all wearing shoes - have washed up on north America’s west coast since 2007.

The detached extremities have been found in British Columbia, Canada, and Washington state in the US, with the latest being discovered on Botanical Beach, Vancouver Island, earlier this week.

CBC News reports that the foot was found by the husband of Charlotte Stephens, who was visiting the island’s west coast.

She said: “He picked it up and brought it out on to the beach, and we had a look at it for about five minutes and we thought, it almost looks like there is an actual foot bone in it.”

The Coroners Service has been confirmed that the remains are human, and it’s hoped that DNA testing will identify the deceased.

This latest foot is believed to have disarticulated naturally from the rest of the body following prolonged immersion in water.

Regional coroner Matt Brown said of the 16 feet: “I believe most of these were determined to be suicides.

"In this [latest] case, we don’t believe there is anything to indicate any level of suspicion at this time.”
