Experience counts for everything in football - so step forward Dickie Borthwick who claims to be the oldest player in the UK.

The 80-year-old is still going strong after recvering from a serious illness and turned out against an under-16 team.

He played for the Chickerell Former Coaches against their team and the final score was 3-3.

Dickie said: "I have recovered from cancer recently. I cook myself some very healthy meals these days and I just love playing the wonderful game.

"I'm sure that my claim to the title as the oldest regular football player in the UK is still very much valid".

Playing for the Wyke Veterans, Dickie still turns out for games around Weymouth.

Often called "the oldest winger in town", he has clocked up 68 years playing football so far.

A Norwegian film crew are even currently making a programme about him.

Dickie first took up the sport in 1947 at the age of 12 and has also been known to play in football matches with his sons Gavin and Glenn.

He comments: "I started playing in Ross-shire in Scotland aged 12 then moved south to Weymouth aged 16.

"I got my first job due to the fact I could play football. The man who interviewed me asked if by any chance did I play football? Yes I said! And back he came really quickly and said you've got the job.

"I have never been sent off. I am a firm but fair player. I just love to get out there for 90 minutes as often as I can. I have lost a bit of speed, but my thoughts are quick and that really counts.

"I intend to keep on playing as my legs and knees are still good and sturdy. I have only had one serious injury and that was a collar bone. So I am still good for a few more years yet".
