Foreign Office updates Tunisia travel advice and says 'period of emergency response'

The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Tunisia. British travellers in Tunisia are being warned to remain cautious after an incident in capital Tunis.

It is understood a man set himself on fire outside the Grand Synagogue. It is said to have taken place at about the time the synagogue was holding its Sabbath prayers.

In an update on January 25, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) said: "On January 24 there was an incident outside the Great Synagogue of Tunis. We advise caution until the period of emergency response clears."

According to Associated Press, the man was killed by police after setting himself alight in front of the synagogue. The Interior Ministry said a police officer and a passer-by suffered burns.

Officials said the man went toward a law enforcement officer while on fire, with a second officer opening fire to protect his colleague. The ministry did not reveal who the man was or his possible motive.

It said that the man had unspecified psychiatric disorders.
