Forget skimmers - shimmers are the new credit card-stealing gizmo to watch for

Credit card skimmers are old news in the world of card fraud – scammers are now turning to a stealthy new alternative known as ‘shimmers’.

Criminals force a slim credit device inside credit card readers in shops – which harvests customer information, and is then used to clone cards.

They are known as shimmers, because the devices are forced into the reader slot – like a shim.

Criminals return to the shop later and insert another device into the credit card slot to pick up the stolen data.

Canadian police have asked shops to check inside their credit card readers for shimmers after four were found, when a shopkeeper noticed that cards kept sticking inside one card reader.

Alex Bojic of the Coquitlam RCMP economic crime unit said, ‘You can’t see a shimmer from the outside like the old skimmer version.

‘Businesses and consumers should immediately report anything abnormal about the way their card is acting … especially if the card is sticking inside the machine.’

‘We want to get the word out. Businesses really need to be checking for these kinds of devices and consumers need to be aware of them.’
