Former EastEnders star Marc Elliot has praised the show for its decision to add a gay bar to Albert Square.

Marc previously played gay character Syed Masood on the BBC One soap, and is currently appearing in Holby City as Isaac Mayfield.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Marc expressed his approval of the soap's plan to increase diversity on the show, with new LGBTQ+ storylines and a new gay bar opening on Albert Square. The show is also set to feature a Pride parade in scenes coming this summer.

"I think it’s important to increase representation across the board on television, and I think flagship shows like EastEnders should be championing that," he said.

"I only see it as a positive thing, totally. I think more representation – disabled people, people from different cultures and ethnicities, and all sorts. Yeah, I think everybody needs to be represented.

"People need to see themselves on screen, because I think it's important to not feel alienated. So yeah, I think it's really important, and it's a great move."

Marc's Holby City character Isaac recently made a shock return to the soap following a stint in prison.

"I think it's a 'moth to a flame' type of thing," he told Digital Spy. "There's no doubt about it: Isaac was an abusive bastard in their relationship. He was a horrible human, and really controlling, and he was a nasty bit of work."

EastEnders and Holby City both air on BBC One.
