Former gang boss Daniel Gee has been apprehended by police over a month after he absconded from prison. The former gangster from Merseyside, who transformed his own estate into a round-the-clock drug dealing hub, fled from Kirklevington Grange prison in North Yorkshire on May 27.

Merseyside Police, who took over the case from Cleveland Police, confirmed to the Liverpool Echo today, Wednesday, June 26, that the fugitive was captured yesterday in Wigan. The ECHO understands Gee was located in the New Springs area of the Greater Manchester town.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said today that Gee is currently in police custody and will be returned to prison. Gee was initially imprisoned on an indeterminate sentence for public protection in 2010 following his conviction for firearm offences after he planned to arm himself to take revenge against a teenager.

The courts heard he had planned to arm himself after issuing death threats to 16 year old gunman Jamie Starkey. Gee was seriously wounded after being shot by Starkey, which occurred outside an Anfield pub in the early hours, with one of the bullets penetrating his stomach and lung before exiting his back.

In a trial in October 2009, Gee was found guilty of two counts of threats to kill and another two of blackmail. During a trial, the jurors were unable to agree on the two charges of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to possess firearms and ammunition.

As his second trial was about to commence, Gee, formerly of Maryport Close, Everton, pleaded guilty to the second charge. Prosecutor Ian Unsworth KC said Gee's desire for revenge "knew no bounds".

The then Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Henry Globe KC said: "I am in no doubt that the public must be protected from you in the future. I really do not know when it will be safe to release you."
