A former Preston North End footballer has been jailed for three years after running a cannabis farm.

Luke Foster, 38, who also played for Oxford United, admitted producing the class B drug and is now behind bars at HMP Nottingham. The defender was previously in a relationship with Rebecca Vardy and the pair have had numerous public spats since their split in 2013.

Vardy, who is now married to Leicester player Jamie Vardy, is said to be 'furious' about the decision to jail the father of her teenage child.

A source close to the WAG told The Sun newspaper the mother-of-five is worried about the effect Foster's incarceration will have on their son.

They said: "This is devastating for Becky — she’s only just found out about this, and of course she’s furious. It’s outrageous.

“Her sole concern is to protect her son — making sure he’s surrounded by people who love him and that this has zero impact on his education and anything else that could affect a teenage boy.”

Foster was jailed with two others last month for running the cannabis factory. He faces a Proceeds of Crime Hearing in July. The defender arrived at PNE on a trial in November 2012 and remained for the 2012 -2013 season, making eight appearances during his time with the club.

He also played for Southport.

In 2017, Foster was ordered to pay Vardy £225 per month for child support for their son. The former lovers were locked in a year-long battle over cash after Vardy, whose maiden name is Nicholson insisted that she was owed cash to look after the then eight-year-old. Documents claimed that the Child Support Agency had ordered Foster to pay the sum, despite previously pleading to be "cut some slack".

A source at the time said: "Luke didn't pay maintenance for months and the CSA were chasing him. Becky just wants him to take some responsibility." Foster later told the Mirror that he had been hoping to get his finances sorted while working in management at Oldham Athletic, he explained: "I want to pay for my child."

Speaking in 2017, Luke said that Becky "liked the finer things" and often drove his Mercedes, which she reportedly wouldn't allow him to drive. "I'd pay for things I couldn't really afford. I'd get another credit card… eventually, it all came crumbling down," he said.
