Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Jonnie Peacock has revealed some stars need a cheeky bit of liquid courage before the live shows.

Speaking to Huffington Post, the Paralympian, who appeared on the show in 2017 and was paired with Oti Mabuse, said he wasn't used to dancing "mostly sober" until he appeared on the series.

"At the time, I didn't even dance when I was out and pretty drunk, so to go out and do it sober – or mostly sober – in front of quite a few people was quite tricky," he said.

When pressed on what he meant by "mostly sober", Jonnie admitted he and his fellow performers did sometimes need a bit of Dutch courage, which often left producers feeling nervous.

"We had a Christmas special, that was a fun one. We didn't have to worry too much about remembering steps, so we could go for it," Jonnie said. "The producers did tell us a couple of stories [afterwards].

"I think with some people, they could smell the breath just before they went out for the show and they got a little bit panicked when they started forgetting steps! But maybe a little shot doesn't hurt."

Jonnie and Oti ended up being the eighth couple eliminated from the series, at the show's special in Blackpool.

But even though he didn't win, Jonnie thoroughly enjoyed his time on the show. "For me, it was great fun, it was an incredible experience and an incredibly scary one too," he said.

"But I made some great memories and met some great people and just had fun."

Strictly Come Dancing returns later this year on BBC One.
