Former Warner Bros. COO Carolyn Blackwood Tapped as Head of Sphere Studios

Sphere Studios, the production house of Sphere Entertainment that is focused on creating original programming and experiences for the Sphere in Las Vegas, has tapped a Hollywood veteran to lead its efforts.

Carolyn Blackwood, who was most recently COO of the Warner Bros. film studio, will become the head of the Burbank-based Sphere Studios. In her new role Blackwood “will direct Sphere Studios’ production operations to maximize the full technical and creative possibilities of Sphere, and strategically position both Studios and Sphere for continued growth and development.”

Blackwood, who worked with former Warner Bros. Pictures CEO Toby Emmerich for decades, left the studio in 2022 after Warner Bros. Discovery brought in MGM veterans Pamela Abdy and Michael DeLuca to run the film studio. She was elevated to COO of the studio in 2019.

Sphere Studios not only works with partners (like musicians) to help them develop their programming for the Sphere, but also develops original programming that can play in the space, like its first original film, Darren Aronofsky’s Postcard From Earth.

“Our team at Sphere Studios is working closely with artists, brands, and technologists to bring the next generation of immersive entertainment experiences to audiences in Las Vegas and beyond,” said Jennifer Koester, president and COO of Sphere, to whom Blackwood will report. “We’re pleased to welcome Carolyn to this team of innovators and believe her expertise bringing high-profile entertainment projects to life will be an asset as we continue to build on, and grow, the Studios’ capabilities.”

“Throughout my career, I have focused on creative and business innovation in the entertainment industry, as well as the pursuit of production excellence, and this is a tremendous opportunity to be part of the cutting-edge work at Sphere,” added Blackwood. “I am excited to join the talented and passionate creative and production technology teams at Sphere Studios as we continue reinventing and reimagining the experiences and content that make Sphere the leader in immersive entertainment.”
