Four suspected rogue traders arrested after elderly woman left 'frightened'

Four suspected rogue traders have been arrested on the Isle of Wight this afternoon (Thursday, April 18) following an incident which is said to have left an elderly woman frightened in her own home.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary received reports of suspected rogue traders operating in East Cowes shortly after 1.30pm.

Officers were told an elderly woman was quoted £1,500 for roofing work but explained to the traders that she could not afford it.

The work is said to have started anyway, before demands were made for £800, leaving the woman feeling frightened, said police.

Officers from the West Wight Neighbourhood Team and the District Policing Team arrived on Hefford Road shortly after.

At the scene, four men - aged 18, 19, 29 and 39 - were arrested on suspicion of being a trader failing to provide required information in relation to off-premises contract.

All four men remain in police custody at this time.

It was also reported to police that another East Cowes resident was quoted £600 for work to be completed on his driveway.

A spokesperson from Isle of Wight Police said: "We are aware rogue traders can be very persuasive and convincing in their approach, but remember, having your roof cleaned is not an emergency. Do not be taken in."
