Four people were taken to hospital as 60 firefighters tackled a large blaze at a 22-storey residential block in central London.

Eight fire engines were called to Commercial Street in Spitalfields on Sunday morning after fire engulfed a four-bedroom flat.

Footage recorded from over the road shows the third-storey flat up in flames, with plumes of black smoke billowing from the windows.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said one woman was led to safety by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.

They said three other people were treated at the scene, with all four taken to hospital as a precaution.

Crews from Shoreditch, Dowgate, Euston, and surrounding fire stations attended the scene, and can be seen in the footage on the roof of the building investigating the burnt out flat.

The LFB confirmed at around 1pm that the blaze had been brought under control, but that traffic would be impacted by road closures from Commercial Street to Aldgate High Street, urging residents to avoid the area.

Kabir Hussain, the Aspire party councillor for Spitalfields & Banglatown, confirmed that all residents were safe and sound in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

He added: “We do not want to repeat another Grenfell Tower tragedy in Tower Hamlets.”

In a statement, the LFB said they were investigating the cause of the fire, which is currently unknown.
