The free plastic bottle trick that can save you up to £30 on your water bill

Households may save up to £30 on their water bills as rising costs spur people to mitigate usage levels. Several methods have been encouraged such as shorter showers and not watering the lawn as often.

Amongst these, one cost-effective measure offers a potential saving of both water and cash - and is no more than a used plastic drink bottle filled with water.

Cheryl Risdon, of Assisted Living, says this simple tip could be instrumental in decreasing the volume of water wasted during toilet flushes, which currently equate to six liters for most modern toilets.

She said: "While replacing your toilet with a low-flush model (around 4 litres) is an excellent long-term investment, there's a simple trick you can try in the meantime. Simply place a weighted plastic bottle filled with water in the cistern, as this displaces some of the water used per flush, potentially saving you £20 to £30 a year."
