French court upholds warrant for Assad over chemical weapons

A French judiciary court rejected an appeal for its international arrest warrant against Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to be annulled on the grounds that al-Assad had absolute immunity as head of state. The warrant for complicity in war crimes and crimes against humanity was issued in November, 2023 stems from allegations that al-Assad's regime was responsible for using chemical weapons in an attack that killed over 1,000 people, including hundreds of children, in August, 2021.
