The unnamed character – who is not featured in the first Frozen movie – can be seen about a minute and 20 seconds into the trailer for the second installment, which came out on Wednesday.
She appears only briefly as a gust of wind sweeps a trail of fallen leaves up into the air, causing another character to soar.
Viewers have wondered whether the presence of this new female character means Elsa will be openly lesbian in the new film, following up on comments from Disney fans who urged the studio to make her their first out LGBTQ+ princess.
“That new girl character in the Frozen 2 trailer better be Elsa’s girlfriend, that’s all I’m saying. Don’t play me Disney, I see you!!” another person wrote.
Several viewers, however, have argued that the animated character looks too young to be Elsa’s girlfriend.
Instead, they have suggested she could be a relative, such as a cousin or even the daughter of Elsa’s sister Anna.
Director and writer Jennifer Lee told the Huffington Post last year: “For me ... Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go.”
Frozen 2 is set to be released in November, and should answer fans’ most burning questions regarding the mystery new character.
