A total of nine candidates are standing in East Londonderry this time around as the DUP veteran Gregory Campbell seeks to hold on to the seat he first won all the way back in 2001.

A firmly unionist constituency that comprises much of the east and north of Co Derry, no nationalist has ever been returned as MP for East Londonderry since the creation of the constituency following boundary changes in the early 1980s.

First won by the DUP's Gregory Campbell from the incumbent UUP candidate William Ross back in 2001, it has been considered a safe seat for the DUP ever since with Mr Campbell winning in six successive General Elections - with increasing majorities in each poll since 2010.

Last time around, in 2019, Gregory Campbell strolled to victory with a majority of 9,607 - more than the total number of votes cast for his next closest challenger Cara Hunter of the SDLP.

While his only unionist competition in the snap winter election called by Theresa May in 2019 came in the form of the UUP candidate Richard Holmes, this time around the unionist competition could be fiercer with three Northern Ireland unionist candidates standing.

The TUV's Allister Kyle and the UUP's Glen Miller will both be aiming to secure a solid vote on July 4.

And there are three nationalist candidates again in East Londonderry this time, with the SDLP's Cara Hunter returning, Kathleen McGurk standing for Sinn Fein, Gemma Brolly standing for Aontú.

The Alliance Party, who secured their highest ever share of the vote in East Londonderry in 2019 with just over 15%, are standing Richard Stewart for this year's General Election.

The Greens are also standing a candidate in the form of Jen McCahon.

The Conservative Party candidate for East Londonderry, meanwhile, is Claire Scull.
