A total of eight candidates are set to contest the 2024 General Election in the Foyle constituency.

The largely urban Derry city seat has been held by the SDLP for all but two years since the constituency was created in boundary changes in the early 1980s - a spell from 2017 to 2019 when Sinn Fein's Elisha McCallion narrowly outpolled the incumbent Mark Durkan.

Last time around, SDLP leader Colum Eastwood secured a crushing majority of over 17,000 - one of the UK parliament's largest - in an election contested by six candidates.

A nationalist dominated constituency, the SDLP and Sinn Fein have finished in first and second place in Foyle in every election since the 1990s.

With Mr Eastwood standing again in 2024, he will be hoping to see off the challenge from the Sinn Fein candidate Sandra Duffy - who secured the highest number of first preference votes of any candidate in the local government elections for Derry City and Strabane Council in May, 2023.

The Aontú candidate in 2019 Anne McCloskey returns this time as an independent candidate having left the party, while Aontú are standing John Boyle as their candidate in 2024.

Alliance are fielding Rachael Ferguson as their candidate again this time, who secured a record high 2.7% vote share for the party when she stood in Foyle in 2019.

People Before Profit's candidate is Shaun Harkin, who won 3% of the vote when he stood in Foyle in 2017 and 2.7% in 2019.

The DUP candidate is Gary Middleton for the fourth General Election in Foyle in a row, while the UUP are fielding Janice Montgomery as their candidate this time around.
