With summer well on the way, it's the perfect time to enjoy a long walk along one of our beautiful North East beaches - but dog owners need to be aware of rules that are now in force in some areas.

As of Wednesday, May 1, dogs are banned or partly excluded from several beaches in the region for the next five months, with Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) in place until September 30. With the early May bank holiday weekend coming up, anyone planning to take their four-legged friends to the coast will want to ensure they brush up on the restrictions where they live to avoid being caught out.

Signs are displayed at the affected areas warning visitors of the exclusions, and any owners caught walking their dogs on the banned areas could be handed an on-the-spot fine of up to £100, which could increase to as much as £1,000 if taken to court. Here's what you need to know about which places you can't walk your dog in Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland this summer.

Northumberland

Dogs are not allowed on the section of beach at Newbiggin by the Sea from the breakwater at Church Point to the beach access from the promenade at Sidney Crescent, between May 1 and September 30.

Dogs are also not allowed on the section of beach at Blyth from the beach access at Beachway to the beach access at the southern end of the Links Road car park, between 1st May to 30th September each year. You can find more details on the Northumberland County Council website.

North Tyneside

Under Public Space Protection Orders, dogs are not allowed at the following locations on the North Tyneside coast between May 1 and September 30:

Dogs can be walked on the section of Whitley Bay beach north of Panama Gardens, and at the northern end of Tynemouth Longsands, towards Cullercoats. You can read more about these PSPOs on the North Tyneside Council website.

South Tyneside

Dogs are not allowed on Sandhaven Beach between May 1 and September 30 between the hours of 8am and 6pm. They are, however, allowed on Littlehaven Beach (next to Sandhaven) and Marsden Beach throughout the year.

You can find more information on the South Tyneside Council website.

Sunderland

The dog exclusion zones in Sunderland apply to Roker beach and to a limited stretch of beach at Seaburn, from Morrisons to just south of the junction of Dykelands Road and Whitburn Road, between May 1 and September 30.

You can find more details and maps outlining the banned areas on the Sunderland City Council website.
