The results for South Tyneside's local election have now been confirmed. Voters headed to the polls on May 2 to elect their local representatives.

Given that South Tyneside Council operates its elections by 'thirds' for its 54 councillors, one seat in each council ward was up for election, with a total of 18 councillors to be elected. The list of contenders included campaigners, former councillors and previous local election candidates, all eager to secure seats.

The candidates are listed below, but this article has now been updated with a link to the results - see South Tyneside's local election results here.

The council's ruling Labour Group, along with the opposition Green Party, Independents and Conservatives, will be battling for and defending seats across the borough.

Both the Labour Group and Green Party are fielding candidates in all 18 wards this year, with several senior Labour councillors also standing for re-election.

Among them are councillor Tracey Dixon, leader of South Tyneside Council, deputy leader councillor Audrey Huntley, cabinet member Joanne Bell, and the current Mayor of South Tyneside, John McCabe.

In the past, the Conservatives have fielded candidates in most of South Tyneside's electoral wards. However, in 2024, they are only putting forward candidates in four wards.

Councillor Ian Forster, the lone Conservative representative on the council, will be defending his seat in the Cleadon and East Boldon ward.

Approximately 14 independent candidates are also running across the borough, with incumbent independent David Kennedy defending his seat in the Primrose ward.

Elsewhere, Reform UK is fielding candidates in an attempt to secure seats on the council in both the Harton and Monkton wards.

In addition to the council election, voters in Sunderland, Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, and South Tyneside are electing a North East Mayor.

South Tyneside voters, along with those in Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, and Sunderland, will also help determine the Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner.

New election rules require voters to present photo ID at polling stations.

This new requirement was introduced by the Government's Elections Act. To find out which ID you can use at the polling station, visit the Electoral Commission website.

If you do not possess one of the accepted types of photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate at www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate or by completing and submitting a paper form to the elections office.

The cut-off for applying for a Voter Authority Certificate is 5pm on Wednesday, April 24. To be eligible, voters must be registered on the Electoral Register and provide a photograph, full name, date of birth, voting address, and National Insurance number.

The last day to register to vote is Tuesday, April 16, at midnight. You can apply online at https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
