A council has called in the police after vandals nicked the head of a statue - leaving locals gutted. Folkestone and Hythe District Council contacted Kent Police after discovering the damage earlier this week.

The statue, which lives in Radnor Park, Folkestone, depicts St Eanswythe, who is believed to have founded a nunnery in the area in the 7th Century. A council spokesperson posted before and after pictures on Facebook, stating: "Not a game of spot the difference we wanted to play..."

"On the left, a photograph of the beautiful St Eanswythe sculpture in Radnor Park as it should be. On the right, as it stands now."

"We're incredibly upset that such, let's be honest, pointless vandalism has happened in one of our much-loved parks with Green Flag status. It is hoped a replacement can be arranged, but that takes time and costs taxpayers' money.

"The matter has been reported to the police. Please call 101 if you have any information."

Commenters on the post shared in the council's rage, with one adding: "Well maybe if the people who did this are caught, they should be made to pay for a replacement rather than the taxpayer! That will make them think about doing it again and send a message to others!"

Another said: "This is absolutely disgusting, no respect for anything." A spokesperson for Kent Police said: "Kent Police was contacted on Tuesday, June 25 and it was reported that a statue in Radnor Park, Folkestone, had been damaged.
