If you've noticed a musty odour or a black residue inside your washing machine, it's likely that mould has taken hold of the appliance's seal. The seals of washing machines, particularly in front-loading models, are crucial for keeping water contained during use. This rubber gasket, which encircles the door, is prone to becoming dirty and mouldy due to its location and exposure to damp laundry.

Replacing it can be an absolute nightmare too, as it's often sealed with a tight length of metal that keeps your washing machine watertight. Carole Hampsey, battling with her grimy washing machine seal, turned to a Mrs Hinch fan group on Facebook for advice. Mrs Hinch, known off social media as Sophie Hinchliffe, has inspired a legion of followers to share cleaning tips online.

In her plea to the 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips' group, Carole posted: "Hi, I'm going nuts trying to clean the rubber seal on my washing machine does anybody have any great ideas I can try please? ". Her query was met with a flood of suggestions, but the standout recommendation was using a mould and mildew spray, reports the Express.

Contributor Jez Lunn advised: "Spray with Astonish Mould and Mildew remover. It's a game changer." Echoing this sentiment, Sharon Stoddart commented: "Astonish Mould and Mildew spray," while Susan Monk confirmed its efficacy with: "Worked for me! ".

Mel Dyson proposed: "Mould and mildew remover to get the worst off then soak some kitchen roll and leave it to sit for an hour or so, it comes up like new." Astonish Mould and Mildew Blaster is widely available online and in local supermarkets. It's priced at £1.50 at Morrisons, £1.49 at The Range and £1.50 at Iceland.

The product asserts it "removes tough stains without the need for scrubbing, whilst regular use helps prevent return". The item has garnered a rating of 4.6/5 on the Morrisons website, with 31 five-star reviews.

One satisfied customer shared: "Kills mould and fast. Unlike bleach, it does not discolour surfaces." Another fan raved: "It's not often I write reviews, but my goodness, I just had to for this product! It's like magic! Spray on, leave for a little while and wipe away. It's that simple! It works better than more expensive brands. Get it, you will not be disappointed."

However, not all shoppers were as impressed, mentioning the product didn't quite do the job and had a disagreeable scent.

An individual commented: "This made no difference to my bathroom, even if the mould was not that bad. The smell is vile. I am going back to the leading brand because it simply works." Other suggested solutions from Mrs Hinch fans for cleaning washing machine seals include using a dishwasher tablet, Dettol Mould and Mildew remover, and Kilrock gel.

Janet Smith-Calverley advised: "Rub the seal with a dishwasher tablet, it works brilliantly." Carol Stanners shared her thoughts in the comments section, expressing: "Dettol mould and mildew remover. Used that for a few weeks now. It works for me."

Furthermore, Kathleen Hanlon responded with her own recommendation, stating: "I used Kilrock Gel with a brush. Leave for a while then rinse."
