White socks are notorious for picking up stains that seem near impossible to oust and they also pill over time, looking worn out even after a thorough cleaning.

Specialised detergents boasting whitening powers often disappoint when faced with stubborn sock stains. Facing the prospect of purchasing new socks due to their worn appearance, Amy Chu sought advice on the Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook group.

She said: "Does anyone know how to get dirty marks out of white socks? My daughter's socks are horrendous and I feel like I've tried everything." Group members recommended not your typical baking soda or white vinegar, but another natural remedy - soda crystals, reports the Express.

Gemma Phillips said: "Soak in soda crystals for half an hour before popping on a hot white wash. Miracle worker!" Lorraine Warner said: "Soda crystals and a scoop of detergent soak in hot water and then put amongst wash."

Keelee Wren said: "Soak with soda crystals for 30 minutes then put in the washing machine. They'll come out dazzling."

Rachel Wortley said: "Leave to soak in soda crystals. Then add them to a white wash and add a big scoop of soda crystals. All natural and work wonders."

Catherine Bishop added: "Soda crystals in a saucepan is game-changing. Just boil it on the cooker like they used to years ago. It works."

Julia Mansfield also offered her advice, she said: "Big saucepan with soda crystals and boiling water then just let them have a simmer for about half an hour and then put them on a white wash. Always works for me."

Soda crystals may not bleach, but they excel at removing stains from laundry. You can get your hands on a 1kg bag of soda crystals online from Big Green Smile for £3.50 or snap it up on Amazon for £3.99.

But if soda crystals aren't cutting it for those tough sock stains, you might want to try Napisan. This well-regarded laundry whitener can be found at Asda priced at £4.50 or pick one up from Sainsbury's for £5.
