HBO is moving ahead with its fifth Game of Thrones spin-off, this time in tandem with one of the show's most popular writers.

The network has attached Emmy winner Bryan Cogman, co-executive producer of Game of Thrones, to work closely with author George R.R. Martin on another prequel series, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Since the first season of Game of Thrones, Cogman has collaborated with co-showunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss - who have chosen to create a controversial slavery-themed drama for HBO rather than be involved in any of Game of Thrones' prequel series.

Cogman has penned some of the most memorable Game of Thrones moments, including the trial of Tyrion Lannister in 'The Laws of Gods and Men' (season 4) and this season's 'Stormborn'.

Earlier this year, HBO president Casey Bloys indicated that he only intended for one of these potential Game of Thrones prequels to eventually make to TV.

"I want to put the prequels in context," Bloys clarified to the magazine. "It should go without saying I love having a show with this much intense interest around it.

"Even the smallest bit of information is a big deal and I appreciate that. But I wanted to make sure fans know this is a really embryonic process. I haven't even seen outlines. In the press at large, everybody said, 'there are four spinoffs' and they assume that means each one is happening and we're going to have a new Game of Thrones show per quarter. That's not what's going on.

"The idea is not to do four shows. The bar set by [producers David Benioff and D. B. Weiss] is so high that my hope is to get one show that lives up to it. Also, this is a long-term plan. Our No. 1 goal is the seventh season this summer and getting the eighth season written and aired."

One of those working with George R.R. Martin on a potential prequel is The Limehouse Golem writer Jane Goldman, who recently spoke with Digital Spy about developing the high-profile TV project.

"I am just writing ideas and outlining some things," she told us. "I really can't say very much about it, but yeah, it's all going well. I'm having lots of fun making stuff up!"

Game of Thrones will return for its eighth and final season either next year or in 2019.
