Game of Thrones star Kit Harington has revealed that the public attention over the famous season six Jon Snow twist took a toll on his mental health.

In case you forgot, at the end of season five the actor's character was left for dead, though there was endless speculation during the break between seasons that he wasn't really gone for good.

It wasn't helped by the leak of on-set pictures showing Harington back in action, and to no huge surprise, in season six Snow was brought back from the dead.

"When you become the cliffhanger of a TV show, and a TV show probably at the height of its power, the focus on you is f**king terrifying," the actor recalled to Variety.

"You get people shouting at you on the street, 'Are you dead?' At the same time you have to have this appearance. All of your neuroses - and I’m as neurotic as any actor - get heightened with that level of focus."

Speaking on the intense attention that he drew, Harington admitted: "It wasn’t a very good time in my life. I felt I had to feel that I was the most fortunate person in the world, when actually, I felt very vulnerable.

"I had a shaky time in my life around there - like I think a lot of people do in their 20s. That was a time when I started therapy, and started talking to people.

"I had felt very unsafe, and I wasn’t talking to anyone. I had to feel very grateful for what I have, but I felt incredibly concerned about whether I could even f**king act."

In the same interview, Harington revealed that relationships were "frayed" with his colleagues on set as they filmed the upcoming final season of Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones season 8 will premiere on April 14, 2019. The show airs on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK. Season 7 is now available to buy on DVD, Blu-ray or digital download.
