Game of Thrones season 7 trailer breaks viewing record after just 24 hours

HBO finally dropped the first full-length Game of Thrones season seven trailer on Wednesday (24 May) and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it's racked up some serious views.

In its first 24 hours alone, the video was viewed a staggering 61 million times across digital platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

According to Deadline, this would make the trailer the most views for a television promo ever in that time period.

Fans had been waiting months for the trailer following a series of short promos teasing the forthcoming battle between ice and fire.

The previous teaser, titled 'Long Walk to the Throne,' earned the feat of being HBO's most watched ever with views of 67.6 million since it dropped in March. This new trailer looks set to overtake that in just a few days.

It has quite a way to go to beat HBO's current number one - John Oliver's “Donald Drumpf” spoof from his news satire show Last Week Tonight which stands tall with 98 million views.

Game of Thrones returns on HBO and Sky Atlantic 16 July.
