Game of Thrones season 8: Petyr Baelish actor responds to Littlefinger theory

A popular Game of Thrones fan theory about Littlefinger has been debunked by actor Aiden Gillen ahead of season 8 launching in April.

One of the wildest and somehow widely believed predictions was that Petyr Baelish survived having his throat slit by Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), and would go onto become one of the most likely successors to the Iron Throne.

It was been speculated that the Littlefinger seen throughout most of season 7 was in fact one of the Faceless men disguised as the Master of Coin.

In episode four of season seven (“Spoils Of War”), Bran Stark makes it clear he’s onto Littlefinger after being handed the dagger he attempted to have him killed with.

Fans questioned why Baelish didn’t just flee, until they saw him speaking with a young woman in the next episode who appears to whisper to him: “Your time is up.” Littlefinger hands her a coin, which looks very similar to the currency used by the Faceless Men, which is the moment he supposedly arranged the switch and was able to escape.

However, while Gillen told The Sun he thought this was a “good” theory, he also told the Metro that there was no chance of him appearing in season eight.

“I’ve heard a lot of that recently, but no,” he said. “What can you say other than no? To kind of utilise that as I might be able to would be a lie. I’d had enough of that guy. I loved doing it but when it’s done, it’s done.”

Game of Thrones season 8, episode 1 airs on HBO on 14 April. Seasons 1 - 7 are available to watch on NowTV.
