Harry Redknapp has warned Gareth Southgate that only lifting the trophy at Euro 2024 would be enough to give him a real chance of ever managing Manchester United.

The former Middlesbrough boss' future beyond this summer remains unclear. He has been linked with taking over at Old Trafford, should Erik ten Hag's time in charge be brought to an end ahead of the 2024/25 season.

But there are other managers in the running such as Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi, who all now have the added advantage of being out of work. The MEN understands, though, that Southgate is highly regarded by the new decision-makers at Old Trafford, and the 53-year-old would be a top contender.

Given his main focus right now is trying to lead England to a long-awaited trophy, Southgate has played down any talk, reiterating his focus is on the national team. But ex-Tottenham boss Redknapp, who came close himself to managing the Three Lions when Roy Hodgson got the job, has reminded Southgate of what he personally has riding on the tournament in Germany.

In terms of his hopes of being appointed by United, Redknapp exclusively told the MEN: “I think it depends how he does. If we have a disaster in the Euros, I wouldn't think he's going to suddenly become Man United manager, if they're on the horizon.

"I think Gareth has done a good job and he'll probably hopefully win it and stay on. But if he doesn't, it depends on how he does. If we come away from the tournament not being very successful, then he's not going to walk in to a new job. The chances are he wouldn't walk into a Man United.

"And if he does come out as a winner, he's got great options, and the chances are if the Man United job is available, he'd be favourite.

"If we win it, the country would want to keep him on as England manager, take us to the next World Cup. So it depends on what comes out of this tournament.”

Southgate’s got some big calls to make in terms of his set-up at the Euros. Fitting in Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden is a priority after their incredible seasons for Real Madrid and Manchester City respectively, but as has been seen in the past – looking back to cases such as Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes – it's easier said than done.

Getting that right could prove make or break for Southgate – with England and in terms of his attractiveness to top Premier League clubs like United. Redknapp says: “We've got options, it depends how bold you want to be. I'd certainly play (Declan) Rice and Bellingham.

"You play Foden in behind if you're really bold and you play whoever you decide to play off the left. There are so many good options there – (Jack) Grealish, Cole Palmer, (Anthony) Gorden, (Ebere) Eze.

"Then you've got (Harry) Kane and (Bukayo) Saka who pick themselves. It's a difficult one. Personally, I'm looking at the opposition. I go with Bellingham and Rice, I play Foden behind, and I play Saka. And it's that left wing, the left-sided forward, who do you decide to go with?

"Whether you go with the pace of Gordon or the cleverness of Grealish – that's your options, really. Or you stick Foden back on the left and then you bring in the boy from Man United, (Kobbie) Mainoo, possibly to play between Rice and Bellingham. We've got so much talent, I'd like to see us playing attackingly.”
