England have managed to secure a spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, thanks to an extra-time header from Harry Kane against Slovakia. However, their performance has been less than stellar, considering they were one of the favourites before the tournament began.

We're keen to hear your thoughts in our comments section - what changes should Gareth Southgate make to ensure a smoother journey to the final?

The next match for England is against Switzerland on Saturday, July 6 at 5pm. The Swiss team is currently riding high after a strong group stage performance, which included a 2-0 victory over defending champions Italy, propelling them into the quarter-finals.

Despite topping a group that was notably low-scoring with one win and two draws, Southgate's England came perilously close to a humiliating last-16 exit at the hands of Slovakia, who are ranked as the world's 45th best team according to FIFA. A spectacular goal from Jude Bellingham kept England in the game, with Harry Kane securing the win in extra time.

Despite having the majority of possession and completing nearly double the number of passes as their opponents, England rarely posed a threat, managing just two shots on target.

Southgate also faced criticism for his slow response in bringing on substitutes when England were trailing, with Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze and Ivan Toney making a positive impact when they finally got their chance to play.

England's players are putting on a positive front, despite a whirlwind of opinion about their key men. Kane, who confronted media over their harsh censure of the players earlier in the tournament, declared Bellingham's goal to be “one of the best in our country’s history”.

“Jude does what Jude does,” the Bayern Munich striker told ITV. “What an unbelievable goal. It's kept our tournament alive. I know the fans back home would have enjoyed that. What a win. One of the best in our country's history I reckon."

"What a player he is, he works so hard for the team. There's been a lot of talk about him the last couple of days, but it shows what he can do."

England may have reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, but pundits including Alan Shearer remain sceptical. In his recent BBC column, Shearer commented: "England are into the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 and ultimately that is all that matters but, for 95 minutes, that was a desperate performance against Slovakia."

"Their lacklustre showing didn't inspire much hope", he continued, "You never give up hope in any game when you are only 1-0 down, but there were next to no signs that we were going to find an equaliser from anywhere until that piece of brilliance."
