A guy called Gary from Chicago had an unexpected starring role during the Oscars. What do you mean you've never heard of him?

Host Jimmy Kimmel set up a stunt that saw a tour bus going around Hollywood stop off at the Dolby Theatre, with the people on board (apparently) unaware that they were about to appear on live television.

Nicole Kidman's husband Keith Urban took a video from the front rows to give us a closer view of the stunt.

"Let's turn out the lights, so we can really surprise them. On the count of three, everyone shout Mahershala," Jimmy announced, referencing Supporting Actor winner Mahershala Ali.

And it was quickly clear that Gary was the real star as he got Denzel Washington to marry him and his fiancée Vicky.

Oh, and then he took a selfie with Mahershala's Oscar and high-fived Ryan Gosling. As you do.

His brief appearance has started a campaign to find Gary so that we can all be his friend.

We wish we'd be as cool as Gary if we ended up in front of a room full of celebrities, but we have a feeling we wouldn't be.

Then again, some people watching weren't as keen with Jimmy's tour bus stunt.

Still, whatever you thought of the stunt, it did at least gift us this tweet which takes aim at La La Land and its depiction of jazz.
