Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have delivered their verdicts on the Premier League relegation battle involving Nottingham Forest, ahead of Sunday’s match against Manchester City.

The Reds are just one place and one point above the drop zone, in 17th place, with four matches remaining, starting against Pep Guardiola’s champions at the City Ground today (4:30pm).

Lineker stressed the importance of Forest’s appeal against their four point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s financial rules being swiftly resolved, while Shearer believes Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are “in the driving seat” to stay up, ahead of Luton Town and Burnley, who are in 18th and 19th place in the table.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Lineker said: “It’s going to be tight and I turn your attention to Nottingham Forest’s last fixture of the season, or Burnley’s last fixture, is Burnley versus Forest.

“I think with the four point deduction for Forest, they’ve got an appeal going on. I think they really need to resolve that appeal before the end of the season. You can’t have sides being relegated by an appeal commission. You’ve got to get it done before, surely?”

Shearer responded: “I agree. And they have also got Sheffield United away and you said Burnley away last game of the season, so I would think Forest, without doubt, are in the driving seat, and will probably just have enough.”
