Gary Oldman has done it all in the acting world - except join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The influencial actor is currently riding high with an Academy Award nomination for portraying Winston Churchill in the period drama Darkest Hour, so it's safe to say he's more in-demand than ever.

The 59-year-old does have previous superhero experience playing Gotham City police chief James Gordon in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and yet the MCU has somehow eluded him thus far.

At the Screen Actors Guild Awards over the weekend, Oldman was asked by People why he's yet to pop up alongside Iron Man, Thor and Captain America in one of Marvel Studios' record-breaking blockbusters.

"Marvel hasn't called me," he explained on the red carpet, adding: "But now that you mentioned it, if they're tuning in, my son wants me to!"

How perfect would Gary Oldman be as Doctor Doom or even Galactus? Hopefully Marvel Studios is listening and make that call soon…

Meanwhile, Oldman's award season roll continues. He picked up the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor on Sunday (January 21) and is expected to be a frontrunner in the same category at the Oscars.

He's next expected to appear on the big screen in Hunter Killer, an adaptation of the novel Firing Point also starring Billy Bob Thornton, Gerard Butler and Linda Cardellini.

Darkest Hour is currently playing both in US and UK cinemas. Watch a trailer for the World War II drama below:
