It's the news that all Gavin and Stacey fans have been waiting for - the hit BBC series is set to return for one last outing this Christmas, its creators have confirmed.

James Corden and Ruth Jones shared the news on social media on Friday morning (May 3), giving followers an exciting glimpse of what's to come. In a selfie posted on Instagram that quickly send followers into a frenzy, the pair were seen holding a script reading: "Gavin and Stacey: the finale."

James wrote alongside the snap: "Some news... It's official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James."

The BBC also confirmed the news, writing: "We'll have: A chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, bag of chips, keema naan, nine poppadoms and the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey!!!"

We last saw Smithy, Nessa and the gang on Christmas day 2019, in an epic episode which ended on a bombshell cliff-hanger with Ruth Jones' Nessa confessing to James Corden's Smithy that she was in love with him. Fans will recall that Nessa even got down on one knee to propose - but the credits rolled before we heard Smithy's answer.

Five years on, it looks like it's finally time to find out if the pair get their happily ever after. Gavin and Stacey has been on our screens since 2007, starring Matthew Horne and Joanna Page as the lead couple alongside Larry Lamb Alison Steadman as Gavin's parents Mick and Pam, Melanie Walters as Stacey's mum Gwen - and of course, Rob Brydon as Uncle Bryn. Maybe this Christmas, we'll also finally hear the story of what happened on that fishing trip...
