Gemma Atkinson has revealed she feels “incredibly lucky” after haemorrhaging and losing a lot of blood following the birth of her baby daughter.
Atkinson and Strictly Come Dancing professional Gorka Marquez, welcomed baby Mia earlier this month, but the actress has now revealed the difficult birth saw her undergoing an emergency C-section, saying nine NHS doctors saw her through a birth which could have had a “different outcome”.
The former Emmerdale and Hollyoaks star posted a candid explanation of her labour on Instagram, with a picture of her holding her newborn child in a hospital bed.
The 34-year-old said: “I was having a haemorrhage. A big one and I lost a lot of blood.
“I don’t remember much other than having around nine doctors in the room, some injecting me, hooking me to drips, physically pulling clots out of me and one comforting Gorks who was beside himself in the corner.”
She added: “The trauma was over and thanks to our NHS and incredible hospital staff we were OK. I’m fully aware for some people it’s a different outcome and I feel incredibly lucky that me and Mia are healthy & healed.”
Atkinson thanked her partner and her mother for their care during the ordeal in hospital.
She also said that her young daughter can achieve anything after the traumatic introduction to the world, and called her “our little soldier”.
She finished the post saying: “The odds were against her from the start, but she’s been a little fighter from day one. Feeds perfectly and is gaining weight like I do on an all inclusive holiday! We’re SO proud of her, she’s our little soldier and I’m so grateful.”
New dad Marquez took to social media after the birth to praise his fiancee, calling her a “hero” and a “trooper”. He said: "She's incredible and she certainly made an entrance, giving us all quite a fright at times.
"Gemma my absolute HERO! After seeing you go through all you did to bring our little girl to life has made me love and respect you even more.
"What a trooper you are. I couldn't be more proud of you!!”
Atkinson met Marquez while participating in the 2017 series of Strictly.
