While being a lawyer may look “appealing” in movies and television, unfortunately, life doesn’t always imitate art. Behind every win in the courtroom are years of schooling, thousands of cases memorized and many hours of preparing for the LSAT (Law School Admission Test).
Just call Jones to the witness stand. The J.D. candidate posted a video sharing what being in law school is really like, and her deposition has some viewers reconsidering their law school aspirations.
“I just finished my first semester of law school, and let me tell you, it is nothing like Legally Blonde,” Jones prefaces, addressing the camera at the beginning of the clip.
Before dishing on life as a law student, Jones states her credentials, explaining that she’s finished with her first semester in law school with the exception of finals.
When it comes to wardrobe, Jones says, “people don’t dress up all the time.” She notes that while some students don business casual attire in the first week, everyone is sporting athleisure apparel by the second.
“Cold calling is real.”
On a more unsettling note, Jones confirms that professors do single out students to show what they know.
While Jones considered herself a reader prior to law school, she had no idea how much she’d be reading every day once she became a student. “Some nights you may be doing nearly 200 pages of reading,” Jones says matter of factly.
Learning about the law sounds similar to learning a new language when Jones explains, “About one-third of the words on the page you’re not going to understand, and most professors expect you to understand every single word.”
For this reason, Jones says it’s essential to have a copy of Black’s Law Dictionary, Pocket Edition “and learn every single word that you do not know” because professors just might cold call you asking for a verbatim definition of a class-action lawsuit.
Some TikTokers reconsidered their interest in law school
Viewers found Jones’s law school lowdown both impressive and intimidating.
“The way my anxiety spiked during this video, and I’m not even in law school,” one user mentioned.
“Never mind, I don’t wanna be a lawyer. I just want to be Elle Woods,” one viewer concluded.
