Generous donation drives change at district food bank

Two local businessmen have granted Windermere and District Food Bank usage of a new van for a year.

The philanthropic duo, including Alex Barton of Horizon Boat Sales and an anonymous co-donor, have covered the costs of the van's lease, insurance, signage and vehicle tax, to help the foodbank collect donations and distribute parcels to people in need.

Ian Winters, team leader at the Food Bank said: "Previously volunteers have used their own vehicles for delivering to clients, but this is major step forward in helping us meet the rising demand for our service, enabling us to cover a large geographical area including Kendal, Windermere, Ambleside and Coniston."

He further revealed that the Food Bank assists about 50 people weekly and anticipates an increased demand in the forthcoming year.

"It’s thanks to generosity of Alex and his co donor that we can continue to meet this growing demand" said Mr Winters.

Expressing his motivations, Mr Barton said: "I believe that in times of difficulty, it is crucial for communities to come together and support the services that are vital for our well-being.

"By offering our assistance to the local food bank, we hope to alleviate some of the burden they are facing and contribute to the wellbeing of our community."
