‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ Trailer: Ewan McGregor Finds Purpose While Trapped in a Russian Hotel

Ewan McGregor is rediscovering the joys of living in his latest series, “A Gentleman in Moscow.”

The “Obi-Wan Kenobi” actor leads the eight episode Showtime limited series adapted from Amor Towles’ bestselling novel. Emmy winner McGregor portrays Count Alexander Rostov who is banished by the Soviets to an attic room in the opulent Hotel Metropol and threatened with death if he ever sets foot outside again. Despite Alexander living through the Russian Revolution, he is completely unaware of what is happening outside of the hotel due to his imprisonment. However, Alexander finds new purpose within his shared smaller community.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who is married to McGregor in real-life, plays self-made film actress Anna Urbanova in the series. Alexa Goodall stars as Alexander’s young friend Nina, while Johnny Harris plays conflicted secret police officer Osip and Fehinti Balogun stars as Alexander’s best friend from university, Mishka.

Leah Harvey, Paul Ready, John Heffernan, Lyès Salem, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, Dee Ahluwalia, Anastasia Hille, Daniel Cerqueira, Leah Balmforth, Billie Gadsdon, and Beau Gadsdon round out the cast.

Ben Vanstone (“The Last Kingdom”) is the showrunner for the series and serves as executive producer along with lead star McGregor. Award-winning director and Emmy nominee Sam Miller (“I May Destroy You”) serves as director to select episodes and executive producer. Sarah O’Gorman (“The Witcher,” “The Last Kingdom”) also serves as director.

“A Gentleman in Moscow” marks the debut production to come through Lionsgate’s first look deal with Tom Harper’s company Popcorn Storm Pictures, with “Peaky Blinders” producer Harper executive producing along with Sharon Hughff, Pancho Mansfield, Moonriver TV’s Xavier Marchand, and author Towles.

“A Gentleman in Moscow” is produced by Lionsgate Television in association with Paramount.

McGregor previously reflected on his decades-long career following his 1996 breakout role in “Trainspotting.”

“I was so into being this sort of antihero,” McGregor said in August 2022 while on the “Smartless” podcast. “I felt like an indie British actor. I felt like that defined me.”

He added, “When ‘Star Wars’ came around, I felt, ‘I don’t know if I want to do this. This isn’t me.'”

“A Gentleman in Moscow” premieres March 29 on Paramount+ with the Paramount+ with Showtime plan. The series debuts on the Showtime channel March 31. Check out the trailer below.
