George RR Martin has confirmed he is working on "five successor shows" for Game of Thrones, so don't expect there to be a lot of time for The Winds of Winter in the meantime, book fans.

Earlier this year, HBO revealed it was working on four potential prequel series, to air after the main series ends.

Martin himself later revealed there were actually five spin-offs in the works, and now, the author has also revealed he's developing all five of them.

Indeed, Martin confirmed reports he's working on the potential prequels in a blog post on his LiveJournal, which seems like a lot of commitment considering only one prequel is expected to make it to air.

"LOTS of things going on with television and film," he said in the post.

"Season 7 of Game of Thrones will be here on July 16... and the five successor shows are moving forward at various rates of speed."

During the blog, Martin also fuelled reports that the spin-offs probably won't all make it to air in expected – but no less, devastating – news.

"How much of this will come to pass, nobody knows," he added. "Ah, the joys of development."

Seriously, with this, three possible Wild Cards series and "a couple other TV projects" that Martin can't tell us about yet, where does he find the time? And will he hurry up with The Winds of Winter already?

Game of Thrones returns to HBO on Sunday, July 16 and Monday, July 17 on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
