Ghislaine Maxwell has claimed she is being assaulted in prison and fed food with maggots inside.

Maxwell, the former girlfriend of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, has been awaiting trial behind bars since her arrest in July 2020.

The 59-year-old has been charged with recruiting four teenage girls for Epstein between 1994 and 2004.

Maxwell’s lawyer complained last week that his client has endured jail conditions like Hannibal Lecter’s in the horror film Silence of the Lambs.

Speaking for the first time since her arrest, Maxwell has now revealed further details about the “living hell” she has endured inside New York’s notorious Metropolitan Detention Centre.

She told the Mail on Sunday: “ I have been assaulted and abused for almost a year and a half.

“I have not had a nutritious meal in that time. I haven’t slept without lights on – fluorescent lights that have damaged my eyes – or been allowed to sleep without constant interruptions.

“I am weak, I am frail. I have no stamina. I am tired. I don’t even have shoes which fit properly. They feed me rotten food. One apple had maggots in it. I have not been allowed to exercise.”

She also claims to see rats in the toilets and has stopped taking showers because the “creepy” prison guards stare at her.

The disturbing revelations comes as the socialite had her £21 million bail application denied for the fourth time last week.

Maxwell’s lawyer complained that his client has endured jail conditions like Hannibal Lecter’s in the horror film Silence of the Lambs.

“The surveillance rivals scenes of Dr. Hannibal Lecter’s incarceration despite the absence of the cage and plastic face guard,” Bobbi Sternheim wrote in a letter to the judge.

Five bail applications have been rejected while Maxwell awaits trial at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York.

In her renewed request, Ms Sternheim said Maxwell has been subjected to physical and emotional abuse by jail guards who shine a light into her cell every 15 minutes as she sleeps.

Surveillance of Maxwell is “disturbing and invasive” at the jail where she was forced to sit alone for hours in a small, chilly cell and poked by a guard when she fell asleep, she continued.

She said her client is also subject to daily pat searches and has been touched in a sexually inappropriate manner by corrections officers on multiple occasions.

The Standard has reached out to Ghislaine Maxwell’s representatives for comment.
