Ghosts boss Jim Howick has shared good news with the comedy's fans, as he has revealed that production has officially begun on the show's fourth season.

The BBC confirmed in December that it had commissioned another batch of six episodes for the comedy, with all of the show's main cast expected to be returning to their roles.

Howick, who co-created Ghosts and who also plays friendly ghost Pat Butcher, shared the promising filming update on Twitter, as he posted a photo of an empty room in West Horsley Place, which doubles as the show's main location of Button House.

"Hello old thing. Rehearsal week begins for series 4. #BBCGhosts," he wrote alongside the picture – which was received with excitement by his followers.

Ghosts stars Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe as married couple Alison and Mike Cooper, who move into the crumbling and historic Button House after Alison inherits it from a distant relative.

The couple's plan to turn the house into a profitable hotel runs into problems when the house's group of resident ghosts decide that they aren't keen on the idea and start to do everything in their power to stop Alison and Mike's plans.

When Alison comes close to death, she begins to be able to interact with the ghosts, forcing them to come to a co-living arrangement.

Actors Lolly Adefope, Katy Wix, Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Laurence Rickard, Martha Howe-Douglas and Ben Willbond are all expected to return as ghosts Kitty, Mary, Thomas, Julian, Robin, Fanny and the Captain, respectively.

No release date has yet been confirmed for the fourth season, which follows the recent Christmas episode which saw Mike and Alison discover a man living in a tent on their house's grounds.

Following Ghosts' renewal, the comedy's creators, who are also behind Yonderland, said: "We are thrilled to be returning to Button House for a fourth series. We have an exciting batch of new stories in store and can't wait to share the next chapter."

Ghosts seasons one, two and three are available to watch on BBC iPlayer. Season four will air on BBC One and on BBC iPlayer.
