Charlotte Ritchie has landed a surprise lead role in You season four, suggesting that the Netflix serial killer series could be headed for a UK setting.

Ritchie, best known for starring in BBC's Ghosts and Call the Midwife, and Channel 4 sitcom Fresh Meat, has been signed up to play the new female lead in You - a role which rarely involves a happy ending.

Killer Joe Goldberg, played by Penn Badgley, has a string of murdered former love interests, as well as their friends who got in the way of romance, behind him as he heads into series four.

You started out in New York before moving to LA and then a US suburban setting for season three, which ended with Joe headed for Paris.

But new plot and character details released with Ritchie's casting point towards the possibility of the thriller arriving on UK shores in its next instalment.

According to Deadline, Ritchie will play Kate, who is "smart, independent, suspicious, misses nothing" and is a loyal friend, but frosty to outsiders.

Her best friend is Lady Phoebe, whose wealth, fame and trusting nature make her an easy target for those with ill intentions.

So when Joe is introduced to their privileged group despite seemingly having nothing to his name and little in common with them, Kate is immediately suspicious and thinks he is not what he appears to be.

Ritchie is the second new casting announced for season four, with White Lotus star Lukas Gage also joining the show as the boyfriend of a wealthy, titled woman - presumably Lady Phoebe.

His character Adam is also said to be an ex-pat American, adding fuel to the rumour that You could be set in the UK although nothing has yet been announced by Netflix.

Ritchie also recently joined the cast of ITV's Grantchester for season seven.
