(Warning: spoilers below if you haven't finished season 1 of the Gifted.)

X-Men spin-off The Gifted was granted a second season even before the first one had finished, having picked up some strong reviews (although not a huge viewership).

The next matter of business, then, is what will follow the explosive two-hour finale of season 1.

That finale saw Polaris cause a plane containing Dr Campbell and anti-mutant Senator Montez to crash, killing them both. At the same time, we saw the Strucker children stop the Sentinel Services and the Hounds, destroying the Mutant Underground's Atlanta base in doing so.

Speaking to IGN, showrunner Matt Nix has now said that you'll be seeing a lot more of mutants in the real world in the upcoming season.

"It's not like they can just go find another abandoned bank in a toxic waste site and take up residence and start up again the way they were," he explained.

"And so one thing I think you'll see a lot more of in season 2, which I really like because it's more thematically resonant and it's fun, is just seeing mutants in the world more. Mutants interacting with humans in everyday circumstances, rather than just mutants in a mutant headquarters interacting with mutants."

Season 2 will also take us deeper into the Hellfire Club as they try to rebuild the institution.

"[We're] really getting a chance to introduce the beginnings of the Hellfire Club, as they're trying to rebuild this organization," Nix said.

"We've already seen a little bit of that, with Esme infiltrating Senator Montez's campaign. How do they infiltrate the halls of power, and how do they manipulate events to their advantage?"

Finally, the showrunner added that we should expect to see more of Jace, "who feels like everything has been taken from him by the mutants finding a new way to carry on their struggle, now that he's no longer with the Sentinel Services."

We don't know yet when The Gifted season 2 will arrive – the first run kicked off in the US on October 2, 2017, and we'd expect it to arrive around the same time this year. You can keep up to date on new developments here.
