This month has already brought us the news that X-Men TV spin-off Legion is officially coming to an end with its third season, and it seems like fellow X-Men show The Gifted may not be too far behind it.

The Gifted is currently airing its second season in both the US and the UK, but showrunner Matt Nix isn't so sure that the series will return for a third season – or at least not in the way it has been so far.

"I don't anticipate a 22-episode season on broadcast but I'd love to be wrong," Nix told /Film, before hinting that The Gifted could return in a different way on streaming, if it doesn't return to Fox.

"I think that my sense is that the most likely thing is that if we come back, we'll come back in some sort of creative way. Some partnership, because I think what we've discovered is that fans of The Gifted are big fans of The Gifted," he continued.

"We have a solid fanbase and it's a little small for the broadcast networks. But we do well on streaming so there may be, my hope is that there’s something to work out in that realm."

While there's been no confirmation on The Gifted's future either way, Nix is still thinking ahead to its potential third season, confirming that he's "developing stuff" at the moment and adding that the series "would be informed by the ideas in Days of Future Past".

But should the worst happen and The Gifted officially gets the axe from across the board, at least it will end on a high, with Nix teasing that the season 2 finale is "pretty epic".

"I was just watching it before I came here," Nix said. "Basically, what's exciting about it is it's pretty epic. It completes our season in what I think is a really satisfying way and opens some really interesting questions promising some really cool story.

"I'm not a big fan of the crazy cliffhanger that sort of punishes the audience for hanging on. At the same time, you want something that says, 'Hey, come back because there's something fun to do here'.

"I feel like we found a good place with that. It's pretty epic. It's pretty big."

The Gifted airs on FOX in the US and on Fox UK in the UK.
