Individuals who suffer from hay fever are familiar with the discomfort caused by symptoms such as runny noses, itchy eyes, and scratchy throats during the spring and summer months. As the temperature rises in the UK, many are experiencing the impact of the increasing pollen levels.

It may come as a pleasant surprise to discover that gin could be a favourable option. Although alcohol is commonly known to worsen hay fever and asthma symptoms, Asthma UK has indicated that specific alcoholic drinks, such as gin, may be less likely to cause irritation.

While alcohol is generally recognised to worsen hay fever and asthma symptoms, Asthma UK has suggested that certain drinks might actually be more appropriate than other alcoholic beverages. This is because over 64% of people with asthma report that certain drinks can trigger their allergies, due to the higher levels of histamine and sulphites found in darker, fermented drinks like beer and red wine.

For those suffering from hay fever, having a drink often seems out of the question. But, clear spirits such as gin and vodka are recommended by Asthma UK due to their low histamine content, making them a better option for allergy sufferers.

While they won't eradicate symptoms or cure your hay fever, gin is particularly suitable for those with sensitivities because its distillation process usually removes sulphites unless intentionally added by the manufacturer. Vodka also claims to have some of the lowest histamine levels of all alcoholic drinks and is typically a safer choice for allergy sufferers.

Wine, beer and cider can also trigger symptoms for some people because these drinks contain higher levels of sulphites and histamines. Those heading to the beer garden's armed with this new remedy are also warned to be aware that soft drinks that are sometimes mixed with alcohol, like fizzy drinks and juices, can also contain sulphites and histamines.

If wine is your preferred beverage, it's advisable to seek out wines with lower sulphite content. Try drinking dry whites like Sauvignon Blanc or sparkling wines like Cava or Prosecco as they are lower in histamines than red wines, according to The Wine Coach.
