Girl Hurt In Bus Crash Is Dead Boy's Cousin

Police have revealed the young girl critically injured in a bus crash in Coventry was a cousin of the seven-year-old boy killed in the accident.

The girl, who is eight, was travelling with her cousin on the top deck of the bus when it ploughed into Sainsbury's supermarket in Trinity Street at 6pm on Saturday.

The boy, Rowan Fitzgerald from Leamington, died at the scene of his injuries; the girl is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

Dora Hancox, in her 70s and from Nuneaton, was also killed as she walked along Trinity Street.

Five people were injured and taken to hospital, and two others were treated at the scene.

Police have confirmed the driver of the bus, which hit stationary cars and a lamppost before smashing into the supermarket, was 77 years old. He is said to be helping with their inquiries.

Grandmother Hazel Boardhurst, who was in the supermarket at the time, told Sky News: "I really didn't know what it was - I thought it might be a bomb or an IS attack - you just don't know these days.

"To find out seconds later it was a bus was unbelievable. Those poor children who were injured - your heart goes out to them."

Maneer Fiaz told Sky News he was shopping nearby when he heard a "loud bang" and saw people running to the scene.

"People were trying to get the driver out. The kids were trapped underneath the seats upstairs. It was absolute chaos,” he said.

Police investigating the crash are asking for any witnesses who have not yet come forward to get in touch.

Inspector Paul Bennett from the West Midlands Police collision investigation unit, said: "We are aware of a number of vital witnesses who we are yet to speak to.

"We know there were possibly hundreds of people at the crash scene on Saturday evening and I would urge these people to come forward as soon as possible and give statements.

"Also if anyone has images or footage of the scenes, please contact us."

Anyone who witnessed the collision should call police on 101 quoting log 1017 of 4/10/15.
