Reboot of hit 90s show 'Gladiators' being 'lined up by BBC'

Sports game show Gladiators is reportedly being rebooted.

The series - which was hosted by Ulrika Jonsson and was a huge hit in the 90s - is apparently being revived by MGM Studios and Hungry Bear, the production company where Holly Willoughby's husband Dan Baldwin is managing director.

The reboot is being lined up for BBC One, reported Broadcast magazine.

It will apparently be shot next year, in Sheffield Arena.

Gladiators originally aired from 1992 to 2000 and was hosted by Jonsson and John Fashanu.

It saw members of the public going up against Gladiators including Jet (Diane Youdale), Hunter (James Crossley), Wolf (Michael Van Wijk) and Nightshade (Judy Simpson) in a series of gruelling challenges that tested their stamina and strength and was a massive success.

TV star Jonsson, 54, previously shared that there was a fair bit of "bed-hopping" on the show.

"That first year in the Hyatt Regency hotel, which we more or less took over, there was a lot of bed-hopping, as there would be with a bunch of young, virile men and women with insane bodies,” she told The Sun last year.

“Apparently, there were quite a few multiples of people enjoying a bit of rough and tumble under the covers, while I was up in my room writing the script and furiously trying to learn my lines.”

Towards the end of its run, the show's popularity waned a bit and in 2000 it was dropped.

The format was briefly resurrected in 2008 but it ended in 2009.

The show is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and there has been some speculation about whether the milestone will be marked with some sort of reboot or reunion.
