Glasgow shoppers who love a bargain have been obsessed with a £3.30 Aldi bag filled with £10 worth of groceries.

Savvy shoppers looking for ways to cut down costs have picked up 5,400 Too Good To Go bags filled with food from the discount supermarket.

Now, the popular budget retailer has introduced two new rules for its popular and fantastically cheap grocery bags which, in partnership with Too Good To Go, has led to Aldi customers saving a whopping £7 million nationwide.

Since teaming up with the world's largest surplus food platform in February 2023, Aldi has sold upwards of half a million bags, contributing to an estimated reduction of 1,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions. These Surprise Bags are filled with items nearing their sell-by or use-by dates and are snapped up for a mere £3.30, despite containing groceries valued at a minimum of £10.

The chain has now unveiled the prime locations where its patrons have reaped the biggest savings and Glasgow has made the list alongside Birmingham and London.

Birmingham takes the lead, with approximately 14,000 Surprise Bags bought, translating into customer savings of over £270,000.

London isn't far behind, with locals having picked up 11,800 bags and pocketed savings exceeding £230,000. Meanwhile, shoppers in Liverpool and Northampton have each saved around £130,000 and £100,000 respectively.

Liz Fox, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, expressed her delight: "It is amazing to see the sheer number of our customers that have made the most of our Too Good To Go Surprise Bags since launching last year.

"This partnership not only allows us to reduce food waste and demonstrate our commitment to being a sustainable retailer, but also enables our customers to access quality food whilst saving even more on their shop."

The data comes as Aldi recently announced the extension of the collection window for its Too Good To Go bags, with customers now able to secure a bag up to 24 hours ahead of the collection time via the app. In addition to this, customers will be able to purchase a Surprise Bag on Sundays from April 21.

Aldi also donates surplus food from its stores through its partnership with Neighbourly, which has seen the supermarket donate more than 45 million meals to those in need since 2019.
