Glasgow police have issued a warning this weekend as Celtic fans look set to descend on the city centre following the Hoops title victory.

Alongside the expected celebrations, a mini heatwave is set to hit the city with temperatures reaching highs of 22 degrees on Saturday, according to the Met Office.

Celtic secured the league title after a 5-0 victory against Kilmarnock on Wednesday, May 15, with punters expected to descend on the city centre to celebrate this weekend with officers warning of 'disruption'.

The champions host St Mirren at Celtic Park on Saturday at 12.30pm and will receive the league trophy at the game. Following on from previous seasons, fans are expected to travel into the Merchant City afterwards and cops have vowed a plan is in place to 'maintain' public safety, the Daily Record reports.

Celtic players were out partying on Wednesday at the Wunderbar cocktail bar and footage shows them singing 'Champions again' as punters joined in.

Last year tens of thousands of Celtic fans turned the city centre into a sea of green and white. Footage captured two fans plunging through a bus stop roof at Glasgow Cross as they linked arms and jumped up and down.

Cops confirmed there were 10 arrests for a number of other offences including assault, acts of public disorder and police assault following the event.

Police Scotland has promised to 'minimise any disruption to the community' this coming weekend.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Glasgow city centre is likely to be much busier than normal on Saturday, 18 May, as it is anticipated that large crowds may gather to celebrate the Scottish Premiership title win by Celtic Football Club."

"We are working closely with partners including Glasgow City Council and will have a proportionate policing plan in place to maintain public safety and minimise any disruption to the community."

Glasgow City Council are working alongside the police and Celtic to try deal with the gathering 'appropriately.

A spokesperson said: "We are aware of the potential for fans to gather publicly as the football season reaches its conclusion and we continue to monitor the situation closely."

"Previous football-related gatherings in Trongate and George Square have led to unacceptable behaviour that have caused significant disruption and costly damage to the city."

"Discussions with Police Scotland and clubs are on-going on how such gathering can be dealt with appropriately and disruption to local communities minimised."
