Golden Globes Debuts One of Hollywood’s Most Expensive Gift Bags Ever With $500,000 Price Tag

The cost of just about everything seems to be skyrocketing these days, so it makes sense that gift bag price tags would also increase — even if they’re actually doled out free to Hollywood VIPs. The Golden Globes has revealed what’s being packed inside the lucrative bags that will be distributed exclusively to winners and presenters at the upcoming 81st Golden Globe Awards, set to take place on Jan. 7.

The contents of each bag total $500,000, which makes it one of and possibly the most expensive gift bag ever to be doled out in association with a major Hollywood awards show. While there are swag suites aplenty that pop up in and around awards season for shows like the Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes and Grammys, THR wasn’t able to locate an official bag valued close to the Globes’ new half a million dollars entry. In 2020, swag bag connoisseurs Distinctive Assets presented its “Everybody Wins” bag with a price tag that totaled $225,000. (The bag was given to Oscar nominees in the acting and directing categories though it had no direct association with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.)

Curated by the luxury lifestyle magazine Robb Report, the Golden Globes gift bag includes more than 35 luxurious products and experiences. Included are luxury stays from top-tier hotel groups such as Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and London’s One Aldwych, as well a five-day, four-night luxury yacht charter cruise in Indonesia from Celestia Phinisi Yacht which usually goes for $50,000.

Also included are products like a $2,000 bottle of Komos Tequila, Colombian emerald earrings from Coomi x Muzo for $69,000 (for one recipient), custom sneakers from Opie Way for $1,500, a session with a celebrity tattoo artist from Brooklyn’s Atelier Eva for $2,500, and Le Domaine’s The Cream for $250, an item from Brad Pitt’s luxe skincare line. But the single most expensive item inside is a collection of six bottles of Liber Pater, dubbed “the most expensive wine in the world,” with a price tag of $193,500, which will be given to one recipient.

In past years, when news breaks of luxury gift bags being doled as freebies, headlines inevitably surface about the tax liabilities incurred by recipients. Due to tax codes, celebrities could be forced to pay 37 percent of the value, per L.A.-based accounting firm EisnerAmper which published a blog post dedicated to the subject. To address this issue, the Golden Globes gift bag will actually be a tote containing a booklet of certificates. Tax liability will only apply if a recipient chooses to redeem a particular certificate. Not interested in a five-day inclusive luxury experience at the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman? Turn it down and the stay won’t turn up on your total tax bill.

As part of its partnership with the Globes, Robb Report will also make an undisclosed contribution to the Golden Globes Foundation. “This generous contribution not only embodies the spirit of giving, but also marks a pivotal moment in our ongoing efforts to uplift underrepresented communities in the entertainment industry,” said Helen Hoehne, president of the Golden Globes. “Together, we are making an impact where it matters.”

The Golden Globes producer Dick Clark Productions is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge that also owns The Hollywood Reporter. Robb Report is also owned by PMC.
