Six golf club captains in East Lancashire are pitching in to bring an initiative for young players to the fore.

Senior players at Clitheroe, Pleasington, Blackburn, Wilpshire, Darwen, and Accrington golf clubs have united to back Blackburn with Darwen Youth Zone's Next Level Sport project.

Earlier this year the six club captains toured the Youth Zone in Blackburn and were impressed by what they saw.

And in support of the Next Level Golf scheme - designed to give youngsters the opportunity to experience the sport - they are backing a charity day later this year.

Clitheroe Golf Club will host the fundraiser on September 20 after the captains offered support on behalf of their clubs.

Ian Battersby, Clitheroe's men's captain, said: "We are able to provide an element of longevity with each of the clubs committing to replicate similar events in each of the next six years.

"Giving back to our community and offering opportunities to young people is at the heart of our mission.

"With the support of all six clubs I am delighted on behalf of Clitheroe Golf Club to be the inaugural hosts this year and we are all committed to making these events a resounding success and giving the young people of our local area a chance to develop their skill sets.’’

Wayne Wild, Youth Zone chair, added: "Next Level is dedicated to empowering all young people to reach their full potential, regardless of their background.

"Our programmes are shaped by the interests and needs of the youth. When consulted, golf emerged as one of the top sports they wished to try.

"Unfortunately, certain barriers can prevent participation. At Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone, we are committed to removing these obstacles so that every young person can thrive. We are immensely grateful for the support of the six local golf clubs.”

An investment by Gordon Taylor, the former PFA chief executive and youth zone patron, has enabled Next Level to make a flying start with a sports manager already appointed.
