Susanna Reid criticised Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain after he slated Kate Beckinsale for her romance with a younger man.

The presenters were discussing some snaps of 43-year-old Beckinsale with her new boyfriend 21-year-old Matt Rife during Tuesday’s show, when Morgan commented that he found the pictures “toe-curling”.

Questioned by an outraged Reid, the presenter justified his comments: “I would feel the same way if it was a man and a young girl like that.”

He explained that it was the age gap between Beckinsale and Rife that made him uncomfortable, saying: “He’s 42, she’s 21, her daughter’s 18.”

Reid clearly wasn’t satisfied with his reasons and pointed out the significant difference in ages between US President Donald Trump (a friend of Morgan’s) and his wife Melania.

“What is the age gap between Donald Trump and Melania Trump? 24 years,” she quipped.

But she wasn’t finished, adding: “What is the age gap between Joan Collins and her husband Percy? She’s 83 and he’s 51.”

The presenter clearly felt there was a hidden meaning behind Morgan’s comments, asking: “Are you a bit jealous? Are you worried about women going off with younger men?

“Is it revealing a little bit of an insecurity about how you match up at a certain age?

“Do you think women in their 40s should only be going out with men in their 50s?”

In return Morgan suggested that his 46-year-old co-host’s impassioned defence of Beckinsale might be due to her own love life, joking: “Are you quietly seeing a 21-year-old?”

But Reid wasn’t fazed and calmly replied: “If I was dating a 21-year-old I wouldn’t be being quiet about it”.
