Gordon Ramsay’s Lucky Cat restaurant: When does the Japanese-inspired spot open in London and what’s on the menu?

Gordon Ramsay is set to open his first major London restaurant in more than a decade.

In February, Ramsay announced that his Mayfair restaurant Maze was to close after 14 years, and would be replaced with a new concept, Lucky Cat.

The multi Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur has commanded both industry accolades and smash hit television ratings throughout his 30 year career, and we're pretty keen to know what's coming next.

So what can we expect from Ramsay’s latest London venture? Here’s everything we know so far about Lucky Cat.

What kind of restaurant is Lucky Cat?

Lucky Cat has been billed by Ramsay’s team as an “authentic Asian Eating House” which is set to be “inspired by the drinking dens of 1930s Tokyo and the Far East”, with the restaurant serving a Japanese-style menu. Guests will be surrounded by an Asian-inspired interior designed by AfroditiKrassa, the team behind Dishoom’s atmospheric Bombay cafe-themed restaurant in Covent Garden.

“I can honestly say there will not be a bad seat in the house,” said Ramsay. “Every table will have a unique view and each guest will come away having experienced something sensational – whether it be the phenomenal menu, the amazing service or the stunning look and feel.”

Asian ingredients, flavours and techniques are set to be front and centre of the menu at Lucky Cat, which will focus on small plates and dishes from a robata grill. The restaurant will also feature a Raw Bar where chefs will prepare sushi and sashimi in front of diners. An Asian-inspired cocktail list includes a Lucky Negroni, for which guests need to roll three dice to determine the combination of gins, vermouths and bitters that will end up in their drink – 216 combinations are available.

Highlights revealed from the main menu include seared otoro (tuna belly) with soy, wakame seaweed oil and baby kale, as well as Orkney scallop with yuzu and sweetcorn hot sauce, wasabi leaf and lime. On opening, the restaurant will also offer a seasonal dish of chawan mushi – a steamed egg custard topped with luxurious ingredients including truffle, mushrooms and caviar.

Desserts will include a passion fruit and yuzu soufflé with lemongrass and ginger sorbet, alongside an Asian twist on one of Gordon Ramsay’s signature desserts: the rum baba will become a “Yum Baba”, served with robata-roasted pineapple and coconut chantilly.

The menu has been designed by both Ramsay and Maze’s former executive chef Ben Orpwood, who previously headed up opulent sushi spot Sexy Fish, after spending six years at Rainer Becker’s Zuma.

“Lucky Cat has been a long-time vision for me and I can’t wait to bring it to life," said Ramsay. "I’ve toured and worked in much of Asia over the years and the culture, the flavours and the incredible cooking never fail to inspire me. We’ve got a great team on the project and we’re ready to bring something really special to London this summer.”
